Two Steps Ahead: An Advanced Program for Evidence Based Amputee Rehabilitation

Robert S. Gailey, PhD, PT
(Associate Professor) has been at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Department of Physical Therapy for over 20 years.   He also has a joint appointment as a Health Science Researcher with Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center and is the Director of the Functional Outcomes Research and Evaluation Center. His doctorate in prosthetics was received from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland where he developed the Amputee Mobility Predictor an objective measure of amputee function. He has worked in the hospital acute care and rehabilitation settings as well as private practice during his 25 years as a physical therapist.  He has lectured extensively around the world on a wide variety of topics related to orthopedics, prosthetics and sports medicine for athletes with disabilities.  He has authored over 50 publications and has continued research efforts directed toward: amputee rehabilitation, the biomechanics and metabolic cost of prosthetic gait, functional assessment and athletic pursuits of the amputee as well as other athletes with disabilities across the life span.  He has worked as a special advisor to the Department of Defense with the development of the military amputee rehabilitation program.  He remains active with many organizations including the Amputee Coalition of America and the American Physical Therapy Association. He also participated as a member of the United States Disabled Sports Medial Team in the Barcelona and Atlanta Paralympic Games and continues to work with some of the most elite athletes with disabilities from around the world.

Two Steps Ahead: An Advanced Program for Evidence Based Amputee Rehabilitation

This is an intermediate level course designed specifically for clinicians who have a working knowledge of lower limb amputee rehabilitation and prosthetics or have attended the One Step Ahead: An Integrated Approach to Lower Limb Prosthetics and Amputee Rehabilitation.  The content focuses on providing participants with the current evidence from the literature with regards to treatment of the diabetic foot, functional assessment, amputee rehabilitation and prosthetics. 

Day One

8:00 – 8:30       History of prosthetics
8:30-9:00          Current trends and issues with diabetes and amputee  demographics
9:00-10:00        Diabetic foot care: an update of contemporary care
10:15-10:30      Break
10:30-11:15      Updates on amputation surgery
11:15-12:00      Amputee advocacy and support creating a clinical network
12:00-1:00        Lunch
1:00-3:00          An evidence-based review of prosthetic components;  separating fact from myth
3:00-3:15          Break
3:15-5:00          Functional outcome measures; determining the appropriate  measures for amputees

Day Two

8:00-10:00        Evidence-based amputee rehabilitation prescription and  treatment application
10:00-10:15      Break
10:15-12:00      Prosthetic gait training: fine tuning and problem solving
12:00-1:00        Lunch
1:00-1:45  Maximizing the use of prosthetic components
1:45-2:30  Prosthetic dynamic alignment; distinguishing amputee from  prosthetic causes
2:30-3:00  Environment skills for bilateral amputees
3:00-3:15  Break
3:15-4:00  Adaptive equipment and prosthetic considerations for  recreational activities
4:00-4:30  Biomechanics of amputee running
4:30-5:00  Training for speed and agility

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to:

* Describe updated diabetic foot care based on evidence from the literature.

* Identify current approaches in the surgical management of amputees.

* Review prosthetic components and use evidence-based knowledge to discuss indications and advantages of the various prosthetic devices.

* Describe the biomechanics of higher-level activities and develop appropriate strategies to assist the amputee in participating in these recreational activities.
